Set in 1862, the film sees them embark on a daredevil adventure to fly higher in an open balloon than anyone has ever done before or since, in the hope of making breathtaking discoveries.

But, as their balloon ascends further than ever imagined, they are forced into an epic fight for survival if they are to make it back on land again.

While James was a real person, who travelled 37,000 feet in the air – the same altitude as jumbo jets fly now – in a hot air balloon, he was not joined on this journey by a woman but a man, aeronaut Henry Coxwell.

On their journey to the the highest reaches of the atmosphere in September 1862, the pair lost the feeling in their limbs, suffered from blurry vision and eventually struggled to keep conscious.

It was Henry who was able to save them by forcing the balloon to descend, and although the flight may have seemed traumatising James was unperturbed and went on to make another 21 flights.

The film has already been picked up by Amazon, in what Deadline called a potential seven-figure deal, and is written by Jack Thorne, who is behind the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child play.
